It's got to stop

Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m a sugar-holic.  Seriously, I’m totally addicted and it has GOT to stop!  I know, I know, some of are thinking I’m skinny enough I shouldn’t complain, but here’s the thing.  I work out a lot, and I lose zero pounds, my body changes nil.  Well I did work out a lot.  Then came vacation over spring break, bronchitis, birthdays, cherished friends visiting from MN, and more feeling under the weather.  I'm back to working out regularly, which for me is at least four times a week.  Do you do cardio and weights you ask?  Why, yes, yes I do.  And it’s really not my other eating habits.  I don’t eat junk food, or fast food, and rarely eat out.  In fact I eat the most in the morning, a decent lunch, a snack in the afternoon and a small dinner.  My problem is the sugar.  I love sweets and they love me, and they have to go!

Outside of the obvious addiction being a problem, I have another problem with kicking the sweets habit.  Her name is Lila.  You see Lila likes sweets as much as I do.  She doesn’t eat as many as I do because her mother won’t let her, but she would if she had the chance.  I tried not having any treats around and that seemed to make her want them more and be more upset when they were gone.  Now I’m trying to take the mystique out of the treats by letting her have something small on a regular basis.  I’m not sure it’s working, but it’s all I can think to do.  I can't have treats in the house, if there are treats in the house I'll cave.  Hmph....what to do, what to do?

I know myself well enough to know that I have to wait until after Easter to do it.  I’ll never make it through the temptation of Eater candy and desserts.  Once all the Easter temptations are gone I've got to sort out how to do it.  Can I keep raisins in the house and cinnamon goldfish?  Do I have to stop cold turkey or I do I limit myself to a set amount.  I have no Earthly idea. [Sigh]

So, anyone else interested in kicking their sweet tooth with me?  If I have to be accountable to someone else I’m much more likely to follow through.  Anyone?...............Anyone???........................PLEASE?!?

I'm back!

Uh oh.  When I logged in just now Blogger told me my last post was 9.26.10.  Yikes!  I'll spare you the details of what's happened in the last six months and start with a new entry.  I mentioned a few entries back that I have been keeping a journal for the kids.  I can't seem to manage to update both the journal and the blog, so I'm just going to copy and paste from the journal to update here.

April 1, 2011
One of the things I’ve been praying for each day is patience.  I lose my patience, with Lila especially, more often than I should.  What usually makes me lose it is her not listening.  Or more to the point, completely ignoring me.  Nothing makes me madder faster than to be ignored....by anyone, not just her.  One of the big problems lately is that she goes from fine to fit in .2 seconds.  You try to talk to her, to calm her down, to reason with her, and she’s out of control before you can even blink an eye.  The more I try to stay calm and talk to her the more upset I’m getting on the inside as she continues to ignore me.  Yes, yes, I know.  What I should do is walk away rather than trying to talk to her, but in my defense, many times I am able to calm her down if I get to her quickly enough and we avert the tantrum.

Yesterday we had a battle-royal and I think God must have been holding my hand the entire time.  Lila got to bed late on Wednesday night so I had to wake her up for school.  She didn’t take a nap while she was there so from the minute I picked her up she was a ball of whining and crying.  Over. Everything.  She was so tired.  I told her after she had her snack she needed to go lay down and rest.  Oh holy cow.  Not only did she want nothing to do with that idea, but she wanted to throw it out a window.

Let me back up and give some back story.  Lila HATES and I mean REALLY HATES to have her bedroom door closed all the way. This all stemmed from a time when she was first became afraid of “monsters”. At the time we used to close her door and rest it against the door frame, but not close it shut.  Well this all worked out fine until the air conditioner started creating a bit of vacuum upstairs and it would cause the door to shut all the way.  In her little mind something invisible closing the door was too much to handle.  What we have done since that time is to put the smallest edge of one of her throw pillows in the door every time she lays down to sleep.  At this point it’s no longer about being scared, it’s about her wanting to be able to see out the door--and power of course, to control anything she can.

So back to yesterday. She screamed and cried and kicked about laying down.  She pulled out every stop she could think of to keep me from leaving the room and when I did leave, she screamed louder and refused to lay down.   I told her if she didn’t stop screaming and rest I was going to close the door all the way.  She didn’t stop, so I closed the door.  This didn’t deter her in the slightest as she just jumped out of bed to open the door.  Little did she know I was on the other side of the door holding it shut.  You can imagine the level of screaming that ensued.  I told her when she stopped pitching a fit and got back in bed to rest I’d open the door again.  We had to go through this exercise no less than 4 times.  Each time I’d open the door she’d be sitting up in her bed and immediately start screaming....and I would shut the door, again, and repeat myself.  This was all happening mind you, with Jett at the bottom of the stairs, looking up, with his shoes in his hands, and shouting “MOMMY”...[5 second pause]...”MOOOOOMMY, side [outside].....[3 second pause]....”MOMMYYYYYY, oohs [shoes], side” and me trying to tell him, I’d be right there.  Finally after the 4th or 5th time of opening, closing, opening, closing the door, she laid down and must have fallen asleep almost instantly.  I came down to help Jett, and couldn’t have been downstairs more than 2 minutes before going up to check on her again and she was out cold. At 5pm I had to go up and wake her and she was still soundly asleep.

The point of my story you ask?  I kept my cool through the entire drama-filled thing.  That is why I said God must have been holding my hand through it all.  Today I didn’t do as well, but I’m trying, and praying, and I guess I’m a work in progress...

3+ months behind

Oh boy, I'm really slacking on keeping up this blog aren't I?  I have been really consistent about journalling and it seems that's all I can manage right now.  I'll spare you the last 3 months of entries, but I'll try to post some of the more recent entries and pictures.

Sep 17th

We’ve had quite the week in the Anguiano house.  It seems Ms. Lila has some sort of sore throat.  On Wed afternoon her voice started sounding very raspy.  Both Wed night and Thr morning I asked her if she was feeling bad and she said no.  Well come Thr night she was really whiny and said her throat hurt.  She sounds like she smokes a pack a day right now.  It’s actually quite sweet and funny to listen to.

I’m wondering if Jetty doesn’t have the same thing, whatever it is, because he has been very much out of sorts the last two days as well. When I picked him up from school Mrs. Diane said he did great, had tons of fun, was a perfect angel.  Good gracious, as soon as I got them both in the car the whining started.  He cried and whined from 2:30-7pm.  It’s not like him so I cannot imagine what else it would be.

We had quite a milestone on Wed as well.  Lali put her face in the water at swimming lessons!!  She was so proud of herself and she didn’t even get upset.  The teacher gave her a little gold ticket Lila got to take to the front desk and pick out a toy from the “treasure chest”.  She was so excited!

Sep 21th
I was tucking Lila in for her nap and I told her I loved her and said “You’re getting so big, but you’re always going to be my girl right?” She said, “Mommy, I can still be your girl when I grow up.”  I almost started to cry.  I told her I wanted her to stay small so I could always tuck her in and carry her around.  This statement cause her to furrow her brow and start to whine about wanting to get bigger like me and Daddy.  I told her I knew she was going to grow up and get big, but that I’d always love her and she’d always be my baby.

Daddy is out of town, so for dinner we had a little potluck.  Some leftover quesadilla, a bean and cheese burrito, and some baked ziti.  We split it up, but Jetty LOVED the baked ziti.  He loved it so much, when it was gone, he licked his bowl.  I turned around and he had the bowl up, his face smack-dab in the middle.  I was so shocked I said, “Jetty what are you doing??”  He just looked at me and gave me this big smile.

We went for a walk this evening since the weather was nice.  We got a short ways from home and I noticed mosquitos.  Lila gets huge welts when she gets bit, so we started for home right away.  I was pushing Jett on the tricycle and I put Lila on my back so we could get home quickly.  When we got close I asked Lila if she was okay.  She said, “Yeah, I’m just getting some extracise”.  Exercise while getting a piggy back ride.

Sep 24th
Jett discovered a long used toddler phrase today.  Uh oh...or as Jetty said “Uh ah”.  It was at dinner and Lila dropped a bit of food and said “uh oh”, which Jett parroted back “uh ah”.  He’s been doing that a lot, repeating us.  He has still been preferring to use his signs rather than talk so I’m excited that he’s using language more.  Yesterday in the car I was trying to get him to repeat what I said.  He repeated mama and dada no problem, he says those regularly.   Then came “baba” which he started saying when Lila would watch Dora, or even read a Dora book.  He says it with the same cadence that Dora uses in her show when she says “backpack”.  Almost every time he sees anything with Dora in/on it he says “baba baba”.

After those first three I got “nana” and “lala”.  Today he even said “Yiya” which he used to say all the time until he learned all the signs.  Tonight he took to licking his bowl again, which Daddy got a big kick out of.  Well Jett got a big kick out of Daddy laughing so he continued putting the bowl up to his face and licking it.  Funny boys!

Journal updates

NOTE: Blogger is messing up the spacing every time I post this, so you'll have to keep scrolling to see everything.

Well, here I am again, ready to update the blog, but can't think of a single thing to talk about.  I've started a short, daily (picture-a-day) journal for the kids and thus far each day when I sit down to write I've had no problems coming up with things to write.  Sit down in front of the blog and I've got nothin'.  Sigh....okay, let's pause while I look at the journal.  Well that helped.  I'm just going to copy and paste some snippets from the journal and the corresponding pictures.  Most of the time I write the entries as if talking to Lali or Jett.  Lots of it has to do with Cinderella as someone in this house is still OBSESSED!  Enjoy...

May 7th
Yesterday Daddy was in the bathroom and you were standing outside the door, banging on it saying, “Let me in Handsome Prince...let me in...HAND.SOME.PRINCE.LET. ME. IIIIIIIINNNN.  Handsome Prince, the carriage is HERE.”  You are just like your Daddy, quoting lines from the movie too.  You have dubbed me the Fairy Godmother, and as I type this you are calling “Oh Grand Duke, come here” to Jett Jett from the other room.  The other day while we were driving in the car you asked me who your jealous step sisters were going to be and said you wanted a step mother, “but not a bad one”.

May 8th
Today I readjusted the crib mattress in Jett’s crib.  The other morning Lali and I woke before Jett.  We thought we heard him wake up and the next thing we heard was a big, house shaking thud.  I bolted up the stairs and when I opened the door I found Jett sitting on the floor in his room.  For the life of me I still can’t figure out how he got out of the crib.  Luckily he was fine, but obviously the crib mattress wasn’t low enough.

After I lowered it Lali got in with Jett and started jumping.  Jett thought this was so much fun and tried to jump too, but didn’t make much headway with Lali making all the bounces.

May 9th
Daddy put Jett in this laundry basket and took him for a little ride around the house.  Daddy walked away and Jett looked at me and did the “more” sign over and over until I gave him a ride.  He kept asking for more, and more.  He loved it.

Lila, when you were Jett’s age Daddy did the same thing with you at Grandpa Terry’s and you didn’t find it the slightest bit amusing.  Here’s a picture of you carrying the basket away so you couldn’t be put inside it anymore.

May 10th
Back to the normal “work” week for us.  Jett’s got an awful cold so we didn’t do much today.  We went to Old Navy to return some clothes, and we shopped for a swimsuit for you Lali.  When were shopping one of the workers started talking to you.  You told her, “I’m a princess” and when she asked your name you said in a very quiet voice “Cinderella”.  Then she asked you your brother’s name and again in a quiet voice you said “the Grand Duke”.  You proceeded to tell her that you didn’t have your glass slippers, they were at home.  She thought you were really funny.

Poor Jett Jett still isn’t feeling well today, and now Daddy isn’t either.  Jett is having a hard time sleeping because he can’t breath and suck on his paci.  After I put him to bed tonight we heard him start coughing and when I went up there to check on him he’d thrown up in his crib.  I’m really hoping this is an isolated incident and not a preview of what the rest of the night’s going to bring.

This picture is a sweet one of you two.  This chair is Jett’s new lounging spot.  He crawls over and plops himself down to survey the room.  He loves to rock back and forth in it--big happy grins.  It’s his little sanctuary, but today Lali came to visit.  Jett was beyond pleased to have her and kept trying to give her big, sloppy kisses.

May 15th
It’s a rainy day here today.  The rain started last night and Lila, you don’t particularly like the thunder.  We needed the water for the plants/grass though.  Today we’re going to do some home projects and then go to dinner with Tia Nena, Gabi, Sofie, and Grandma Frances.  Grandma Frances had surgery a couple weeks ago to remove a cancerous piece from one of her lungs.  It metastasized to one of her lymph nodes so she’ll have to start chemo in another couple weeks.

We went to get my eyes examined and Lali was trying on the glasses for little kids.  You don’t need them, but if you did Lali, you’d look so cute with glasses on.

May 16th
Today was the end of the year program at Mother’s Day Out.  All the MDO and preschool kids got up with their classes and sang songs, and some did little dances along with them.  You and the other kids your age sang a song about God’s promises.  I just now asked you to sing it for me so I could type out the lyrics and you sang “I’m gonna take God’s promises and hide them in my heart.  So I wont forget I’m gonna hide them in my heart.  I’m gonna take God’s promises and hide them in my heart, hide them in my heart.”  I just sang it back to you to make sure I had it right and you said,  “Thaaaat’s how it goes, good remembering Mommy!”

May 17th
When I got you out of your crib we started to come downstairs.  Each time we make the trip down the stairs you point at the pictures of us (you, Lali, Daddy and me) on the wall, raise your arm up, and say “Uhhhhhh” as if to acknowledge our family.

May 18th
Tonight Lila, we were upstairs in the playroom and you decided you wanted to put on your dressup dress (which is a fairy dress with wings from Target) so you could “go to the ball”.  You got it on all by yourself and then I helped you adjust it.  You told me “Thank you Fairy Godmother”.  I took a picture of you and when I showed it to you, you said, “[Gasp] I need my glass slippers” so we went downstairs and put on the shoes you’ve dubbed glass slippers.  I asked you if you wanted some bows for your hair and you did.  Then you were all set for the ball.  You wanted to go to the neighbors house and show Jenna (our 13 year old neighbor, whom you say is your best friend).  You got on your trike and we pedaled over to their house, but they weren’t home.  You looked really sad that they weren’t there to see you dressed up for the ball.  You pedaled back home and played upstairs with me while I made your bed.  Then you discovered your birthday Cinderella dress in your closet and promptly changed clothes, tell me “this one isn’t itchy”, so you could watch some of your Cinderella DVD in your Cinderella dress.

May 19th
Today we were riding in the car and out of the blue Lila told me, "I'm not scared of the funder and lightning anymore cause Jesus holds me up so I can see God watering the plants." Then went on to say, "God gave me all Jesus stuff so I can give it back to him in his heart."  You have been asking lots of questions lately about Jesus dying on the cross and talking about God.  They teach you bible lessons/stories at school and at MOPS/church.  At night Daddy and I have been reading you some of the short stories from your little girl bible.  It tells them in a very simple way.  You also have some Veggie Tales DVDs, one is the story of Esther, which you really like.

Here you are playing dress up again. You had a coffee stir stick and you were pretending to make a dress for the ball.

May 20th
Jett, you’re not feeling well again.  You’ve had a fever the last couple days, but have been such a trooper.  Your nickname is “Dude” and Daddy got you this onsie as representation.  Daddy called you Dude so often as a little baby that everyone else picked it up.  He’s got a thing for the word dude.  Your cousin Sofie called Daddy “Tio Dude” when she was little.
